Stir together flour, brown sugar, and rolled oats in a medium bowl; chill the mixture if room is warm.
Prepare, slice and core the apples and place them in a 9-inch (23 cm) square baking dish (glass preferred).
Add the cold butter or margarine to the topping and cut/mix it in with a slicing action until small pea-sized pieces form.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples and lightly pat it down.
Bake about 30 minutes at 375°F until the top is dark brown (small black spots acceptable); remove and let cool slightly before serving.
